Winemaking Method & Maturation

The Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir 2023 was crafted from fruit grown on unirrigated vineyards located on Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, with all grapes harvested before the March rains, benefiting from natural irrigation that decreased vine stress and allowed optimal ripening.

Maturation for this vintage involved 9.5 months in 228-liter French oak barrels composed of tight grain wood. The oak regime included a mix of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fill barrels, providing balance and subtle oak integration rather than overt wood influence. This approach, alongside careful monitoring of acid and sugar, resulted in a wine with exceptional structure and age-worthiness, true to site and variety.

On colour
The wine presents a clear, bright ruby hue, moderate in intensity, true to classic Pinot Noir style from a cool climate.

On the nose
Aromatic layers reveal beautifully perfumed notes of sour cherries and wild strawberries, supported by subtle hints of cloves for added complexity.

On the palate
The palate is finely structured and elegantly balanced, showcasing vibrant red fruit concentration—particularly cherry and strawberry—interwoven with gentle spice. The acidity is fresh and lively, with well-integrated oak giving polished tannins and a silky finish.

On the whole
This is a graceful, age-worthy Pinot Noir offering purity and finesse from Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge.
