Grape Varieties:
100% Grenache (Ungrafted)
Conditions:
The Piekenierskloof plateau is situated 160 km north of Cape Town and 50 km from the Atlantic ocean as the crow flies. At 600 to 750 metres altitude these old, ungrafted bush vines, growing in sandy loam soils, are rejuvenated by cold air in the evenings during the growing season.
Winemaking Method & Maturation:
Grapes were handpicked early in the morning. 30% whole bunch grapes were added to the destemmed grapes in a wooden foudre.
Grapes were cold-soaked for a few days and fermentation temperature was then kept below 22°C. Punch-downs and pump-overs were given to enhance flavour and colour extraction.
After fermentation, the wine was pressed of the skins into 500l older barrels for maturation space of 8 months before being bottled. After bottling wine was matured for six months in bottle before being released.
Wine Tasting notes:
On colour
The wine shows a clear, bright ruby-red core with lively crimson highlights, typical of cool-climate, high-altitude Grenache.decanter+1
On the nose
The nose is expressive and layered, with dominant notes of ripe red berries—strawberry, raspberry and cherry—complemented by earthy, savoury nuances. Elegant white and pink peppercorn spice sits alongside subtle hints of cloves, cardamom and a touch of aniseed, while a faint smoky whisper from minimal, older French oak adds complexity without overpowering the fruit.alliancewine+3
On the palate
On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry red with refreshing acidity and fine, silky tannins that give structure without grip. Flavours mirror the nose: juicy red fruit and a hint of tart plum lead into savoury, “meaty” mid-palate notes, underscored by gentle spice and a whisper of smoke. The balance is lively and elegant, with a long, lingering finish focused on red berries and a soft, peppery edge.decanter+4
On the whole
A refined, old-vine South African Grenache: bright red-fruited, subtly spicy and savoury, with silky tannins and a long, elegant finish.
