Wine Tasting Notes:
On colour
In the glass, Rainbow's End Family Reserve 2023 presents a deep ruby core with a youthful purple rim, indicating concentration and a relatively young, vibrant Bordeaux-style blend from Stellenbosch. The intensity of colour suggests ripe fruit and significant extraction, consistent with a rich, bold style aged in small French oak barrels.
On the nose
The nose opens with pronounced aromas of dark cherry, black plum and cassis, layered over notes of fresh mint and subtle dried herbs such as sage and thyme. Underneath the fruit and herbal lift, there are hints of dark chocolate and sweet baking spice from extended ageing in French oak, adding complexity and a polished, modern character.
On the palate
On the palate the wine is full-bodied with high, ripe tannins that are firm yet finely textured, supporting concentrated black-fruit flavours of cassis and black plum. Well-judged oak brings notes of cocoa, cedar and a touch of toast, while fresh acidity and a gentle minty lift carry the flavours through a long, structured finish, suggesting very good to outstanding potential for further bottle development.
On the whole
A concentrated, polished and ageworthy Stellenbosch Bordeaux blend, combining ripe black fruit with herbal freshness and classy oak.
