Pinotage began in Bottelary. This wine is an homage to our passion for making refined Pinotage that is typical and worthy of its birthplace. A perfumed wine that is forceful yet possesses ample subtlety and detail.
From a block of bush vines planted in 1995 on Koffieklip soils. These weathered soils are low potential and unirrigated. Yields are between 5 -7 tons per hectare.
From one block of old bush vines on the estate, these grapes are hand harvested and whole-berry fermented with a cultured biodynamic yeast.
Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks until dry and aged for 20 months in 80% new oak.
Wine Tasting Notes:
On colour
Kaapzicht The Steytler Range Pinotage 2021 shows a deep ruby core with a vivid, purple-tinged rim, underlining its youth, concentration and bush-vine Bottelary origins. The colour is intense yet bright and limpid, suggesting ripe skins and confident extraction without overt heaviness.
On the nose
The nose is pronounced and perfumed, dominated by cherry and red berry aromas – think red cherry, raspberry and ripe strawberry – backed by darker red plum notes. Inky, vanilla-tinged oak, together with subtle spice and a gentle earthy undertone, lend depth and a sense of seriousness to the vivid fruit.
On the palate
On the palate the wine is dry, full-bodied and forceful, with concentrated cherry and red-fruit flavours framed by firm yet refined tannins and fresh acidity. Spice and richness create a taut, energetic tension on the mid-palate, while inky, vanilla and earthy notes carry through to an elegant, long, savoury finish that promises excellent ageing potential.
On the whole
A powerful yet refined Pinotage, packed with vibrant cherry and red fruit, layered spice and inky vanilla wrapped in firm tannins and an earthy, lingering finish.
