On colour
The Villion Syrah 2019 shows a deep ruby core with a bright crimson rim, with medium to deep colour intensity. The clarity is very good, with slight viscosity in the glass suggesting generous alcohol and concentration. Overall, the appearance indicates a vibrant, youthful yet structured Syrah.
On the nose
The nose is pronounced, showing ripe red berries, plum and cherry with touches of pomegranate and blueberry. Subtle layers of rooibos, dried herbs, smoked meat, black pepper and cedar sit over gentle caramelised oak spice. The aromatic profile is complex and modern while retaining an elegant, cool-climate lift.
On the palate
The palate is dry with medium to high acidity and a full body, delivering a focused core of plum, cherry and red berry fruit. Fine but firm tannins frame flavours of cherry tobacco, rooibos, black pepper and savoury spice, with well-integrated oak. Alcohol is warm yet balanced, and the long finish carries fruit and spice with a gentle savoury grip.
On the whole
A vibrant, full-bodied and savoury Cape South Coast Syrah, uniting lush red fruit, spice, fine tannin and notable length.
