International Women’s Day is the perfect moment to honour incredible women breaking barriers and making an impact across industries. This year, we’re thrilled to share the story of Vanessa—a vibrant, hardworking sommelier who made waves as the 1st Runner-Up of the Singapore National Sommelier Competition 2024. Not only was she the only woman to land on the podium, but her determination and expertise have also made her a role model for wine enthusiasts everywhere.

Curious about life as a sommelier? Vanessa welcomed us into her world and shared her fascinating journey, from her first sip of a remarkable vintage to competing on the national stage. Grab a glass of your favourite wine and settle in for an inspiring read!

Discovering a Love for Wine

"I had no words to describe what I was drinking." That’s how Vanessa describes her first ‘aha’ moment with wine—a 2008 Domaine Leflaive Chassagne-Montrachet that she tasted while working at a cocktail bar.

"I was so amazed by the wine, but I lacked the vocabulary to truly express it," she says. And just like that, her curiosity was sparked. Vanessa began taking wine courses to better understand the nuances of wine and soon joined Praelum Wine Bistro as a part-timer. One thing led to another, and she moved into a full-time role, deep-diving into the world of wine in a way she had never expected.

Vanessa’s story is proof that passion can ignite from a single moment—and that exploring your curiosity can lead somewhere extraordinary.

The Road to the National Sommelier Competition

Winning 1st Runner-Up in the National Sommelier Competition was no easy feat, and it wasn’t Vanessa’s first attempt either.

"There was a lot of preparation—tasting after work, practicing service techniques, and studying everything from sake to Madeira wines. It’s not just about wine; you have to know so many beverages inside out."

While this was only her second time competing, Vanessa made it to the Semis and Finals for the first time in 2024. She credits her mentor Gerald and her team at Praelum for helping her hone her skills, providing her with tastings, feedback, and constant encouragement.

"Competitions push you to grow," Vanessa explains. "You’re up against some of the best, and that gives you the drive to keep improving."

What Is a Sommelier, Exactly?

For those less familiar with the world of wine, Vanessa describes a sommelier as a bridge between the winery and the consumer.

"We connect people to the stories and philosophies behind the wines they’re drinking," she explains. "It’s not just about recommending a bottle—it’s about educating, analysing trends, and helping customers appreciate wine on a deeper level."

Vanessa’s goal? To guide people on a curated, enriching experience of what’s in their glass, always tailored to their tastes and preferences.

A Day in the Life of a Sommelier

Think being a sommelier is all glamour and sipping wine all day? Think again!

Vanessa’s week typically includes two tastings in the afternoon and evenings dedicated to service, inventory, and planning wine orders.

"It’s a lot of hard work—long hours on your feet, constant studying, and endless tastings," she admits. "But it’s also incredibly fulfilling. Discovering a new wine from a region I’m unfamiliar with always excites me. The learning never stops."

That passion for discovery keeps Vanessa motivated despite the challenges.

Lesser-Known Facts About Being a Sommelier

While Vanessa loves her role, she’s quick to dispel some common misconceptions.

"People often think being a sommelier is all about drinking wine," she laughs. "But there’s so much studying involved! You need to understand regions, grape varieties, food pairings, and market trends."

Another surprise? Interpersonal skills are just as important as wine knowledge.

"You’re working with people every day—whether it’s customers, winemakers, or suppliers. Being approachable and understanding is key."

Life Beyond the Wine Glass

When she’s not working, Vanessa can be found soaking up the sun.

"I love rollerblading, swimming, and spending time at the beach," she shares. "And of course, good food is always part of my day-off plans!" Her free-spirited, adventurous nature translates beautifully into her work, where she’s constantly exploring new flavours and regions.

For those considering a career as a sommelier, Vanessa has some practical advice.

"Take your first steps by signing up for WSET Levels 1 and 2," she recommends. "It’s a great foundation. And if you can, find someone to mentor you. Praelum is amazing at offering guidance for those just starting out."

For Vanessa, being a sommelier is more than just a job—it’s a lifelong journey of discovery, connection, and growth.

Her story is a powerful reminder that passion, hard work, and curiosity can lead to incredible opportunities. Whether you’re a wine aficionado or just starting your exploration of vino, her success is sure to inspire you to savour every step of your own adventures.
