The Kaapzicht wine farm is situation on the Bottlery hills, a place that the Stetyler family considers to be a place of magic. It is where generations of the family were born and had grown up. It is a humble parcel of land, home to the Stetyler family and a great community of farmers who bring out the heart and soul of the place.
75 years of history, in a bottle.
Grape Varieties:
100% Chenin Blanc
Wine Description:
Four generations of Steytlers have been custodians of this special site for almost eight decades. Today, it is one of the oldest Chenin Blanc vineyards in the country. It’s deeply connected to our history and our home, making it impossible to mimic. The wine exemplifies the tension between generosity and restraint found in Bottelary Chenin Blanc. Originally 6ha in size, only 1.1ha of the very low yielding vineyard remains.
Method and Maturation:
Handpicked, 50% whole-bunch pressed, 50% crushed and destemmed (with skin-contact in press).
Natural sedimentation overnight after pressing (light and gentle pressing with maximum pressure of 0.8kpa).
After settling, the wine is racked to 500l barrels for spontaneous fermentation. Fermentation can last between 2–4 weeks. The wine is aged in barrel for 10 months prior to bottling and bottled unfiltered and unfined.
Wine Tasting Notes:
The aromatics are super complex and spicy with lovely nuances of wet straw, dusty white citrus, honeyed yellow peaches, fynbos and sweet pineapple confit. There is focused depth, full bodied plump texture and complexity with nuances of tangerine peel, naartjie pulp and lychee.

Meet the Cellar Master: Danie
“I never decided to become a winemaker. I think when it’s so woven into your family’s identity, winemaking isn’t a choice. It’s part of you. We work with vines that my great-grandfather planted, farming choices my grandfather made, and wines that my dad dedicated his life to.
At Kaapzicht, our terroir creates wines that are rich and opulent. I believe that winemaking it about finding your path and then linking it to what your farm or terroir can give you. It’s a fine balance between understanding what people want, and also being ballsy enough not to chase every trend, but to be true to your origin and house style.
Ultimately, I just want to make wine that everyone wants to drink because it’s great. If your wine is the first bottle that’s empty at a dinner table, you’re always doing well.”
Quintessentially South African
The first Pinotage vineyard is planted on the farm in 1959 – a pioneering move as this was still a young fairly unknown South African wine variety at that time.
Grape Varieties:
100% Pinotage
Wine Description:
Pinotage began in Bottelary. This wine is an homage to our passion for making refined Pinotage that is typical and worthy of its birthplace. A perfumed wine that is forceful yet possesses ample subtlety and detail.
Method and Maturation:
From a block of bush vines planted in 1995 on Koffieklip soils. These weathered soils are low potential and unirrigated. Yields are between 5 -7 tons per hectare.
From one block of old bush vines on the estate, these grapes are hand harvested and whole-berry fermented with a cultured biodynamic yeast.
Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks until dry and aged for 20 months in 80% new oak.
Wine Tasting Notes:
This wine is dominated with cherry and red fruit aromas, backed up with inky and vanilla notes. Spice and richness create tension on the palate leaving an earthy and elegant finish.
